Food Pantry Needs Your Help

Dear Friends in Christ,

“The most theologically significant thing we can do right now is feed people”

-The Rev’d Elizabeth Hadaway

The Ken Perry Food pantry had its busiest day in years this week. Everyone who receives SNAP benefits has been notified by the federal government they will not be getting a November check. People are hungry; people are scared. Feedmore of Western New York, with whom our pantry is associated has increased support from the State of New York, but that means our pantry and pantries around the state are swamped with new clients.

I am not writing asking for money. While non-perishable food is always welcome, I am also not writing asking for that. I am writing asking for help. We need people to pack bags of food. This is normally done during the pantry on Wednesday, but you can help at other times. Heather or Mother Elizabeth can train you to put bags together and you can come over after work, in the afternoon, whenever it works for you after that to make bags. Adult Christian Education this Sunday will be a practical training on how to do this after coffee hour. Mother Elizabeth will show us how the process works. If you cannot be here, but want to learn, speak to her or Heather and they can train you.

Building Fund

Fall is traditionally the time when we collect for the preservation and repair of our historic buildings. You will see envelopes for the Building Fund at the entrances and in the pews. Please consider supporting our efforts to keep Good Shepherd in good shape!

Pete's Pet Pantry needs your support

Our pet pantry has grown exponentially in the last few years. We are now at a critical time due to lack of funds and diminishing donations. We may need to make some drastic changes in how we operate and much food we can contribute to our neighbors. Please consider supporting this Good Shepherd ministry in honor of Pete or in loving memory of beloved pets.

Online Donations

As our Diocese is no longer providing a way to donate online to Good Shepherd without charging the credit card processing fees, please consider a feature most banks provide. It may go by other names, but the Bill Pay Function would be a way to send payments to Good Shepherd with no fees, and payments can be set up to be recurring. We have several parishioners who make monthly donations to Pete's Pet Food Pantry and for their Pledge. If you are interested in pursuing this option, you go to your online bank site and look for that option.  Speak to Pat Lalonde if you have any questions.

Adult Christian Education

This Fall will will again have our Christian Education after Coffee Hour.  The topic will be the Nicene Creed in this 1700 anniversary year!

Session 6: We Believe in the Holy Spirit
November 23
Session 7: We Believe in one Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church
December 7

Discernment Committee

We are creating a committee to go through a process of discernment with Jesse Pyle as he explores the priesthood. This is a six-nine month commitment for about twelve hours total and will help everyone discern who takes part.  Please speak to Father Mike or Mother Elizabeth if you are interested.

Counter Needed

We are in need of one additional person to count donations after the 10:30 service once per month. Training will be provided. Please contact Elaine Richau at wegmom54@aol.comif interested.

Volunteers needed

Do you wish you could do 'a little something' to help with things around the church? Donations aren't the only thing we need. There are several tasks which need someone to help out. If you are interested in helping with any of the following, please contact Elaine Richau at Wegmom54@aol.com

* Wheel empty trash totes to the back of the church every Thursday afternoon (after collection or after 4 pm)

* Return empty bottles (from Smith Hall) for redemption (at your leisure or when they're full). Proceeds can be dropped in the collection plate labeled 'bottle returns'.

* Fall/spring switch: Spring - put fans out as needed, put away: boot trays, shovels, salt; Fall - put away fans, bring out salt, boot trays, shovels, set up driveway poles for plow.

You can make a difference at Good Shepherd with a little of your time. Thank you!

If anyone presents themselves as representing ICE or any other organization of that type please call for Father Mike or Mother Elizabeth and do not invite them into any area of the parish not currently open.

Keep saving your Dash's receipts. They allow us to submit prior year receipts so any old receipts from 2024 are effectively expired going forward. For every $5,000 in receipts we submit, we earn $125.  Even small purchases add up!
